Building a Stronger Main Street for South Schuylkill
South Schuylkill Unified is working with local partners, businesses, volunteers, municipal leaders, and community members to pursue Pennsylvania Main Street designation for Schuylkill Haven's downtown business district.
Main Street is more than one street or one project. It is a proven approach to strengthening local businesses, improving downtown spaces, encouraging community pride, attracting investment, and creating places where people want to live, work, shop, visit, and gather.
What Is Main Street?
The Main Street Approach is a community-based framework for downtown and commercial district revitalization. Main Street America describes the approach as centered around four key areas: Organization, Promotion, Design, and Economic Vitality (SSU refers to this as Economic Development). For South Schuylkill, this means working together to strengthen the physical, economic, social, and promotional life of our downtown and business areas. Main Street is not just about buildings. It is about people, businesses, public spaces, partnerships, events, history, walkability, local pride, and long-term community investment.

Building partnerships and resources to sustain a long-term revitalization effort.
Promotion
Creating a positive image for downtown through marketing and events.
Design
Improving the physical appearance of the district through streetscapes and facades.
Economic Vitality
Strengthening the local economy and recruiting new businesses to the area.
